Local Events & Tradition

Beromünster is a place where customs and celebrations are still very much alive. Throughout the year, traditional processions, fairs and local festivals fill the historic town with colour and community spirit.

Carnival (from Dirty Thursday to Ash Wednesday):
Lively celebrations with Guuggemusik brass bands, masquerades, and guild balls fill the streets and halls of Beromünster.

Ascension Day Procession:
With a tradition going back over 500 years, Beromünster celebrates Ascension Day with a colourful procession of around 200 riders in historical uniforms and countless pilgrims on foot. The solemn entry and closing ceremonies in the festively decorated old town attract thousands of visitors.

Corpus Christi Procession:
A vivid and solemn procession through the collegiate church and the historic town, accompanied by music and the firing of cannons — a deeply rooted Catholic tradition.

Gregorifüür (St. Gregory’s Bonfire):
A hilltop bonfire on St. Gregory’s Day (12 March), an ancient spring custom likely of pre‑Christian origin.

Palm Sunday Procession:
Blessing of palm branches in front of the collegiate church, followed by a festive procession through the old town to the parish church.

Holy Sepulchre:
A monumental wooden structure spanning the entire width of the church nave, created by Josef Ignaz Weiss in 1741. The baroque paintings depict the Passion and Death of Christ. It is displayed in the collegiate church from Passion Sunday until Good Friday.

Arrival of St. Nicholas (Samichlaus Parade):
On the Saturday before 6 December, St. Nicholas arrives in Beromünster, accompanied by schoolchildren with lanterns and bell‑ringers (Treichler), creating a magical and traditional evening atmosphere.

Markets in Beromünster

Beromünster hosts several charming traditional markets throughout the year, each with its own atmosphere and local character.

Spring Market:
Held on a Saturday in the second half of April.
St. Catherine’s Market:
Takes place on the Saturday before St. Catherine’s Day.
“Kilbi” Fair:
A traditional village fair celebrated on the Saturday following the Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer (Bettag).
Christmas Market:
A festive market in December with lights, seasonal treats and a warm Christmas atmosphere.
